Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy is a condition that happens when the thyroid does not produce an adequate hormone to carry out its functions. This can result in several complications such as weak muscles, fatigue, brittle bones, constipation, and slow healing. Hypothyroidism also contributes to osteoporosis. When this happens, the baby would be likely to become weak or fragile.

The usual first-trimester treatment of Hypothyroidism is the synthetic form of thyroxine. However, in the third trimester or even earlier, if needed, patients are given the human thyroid hormone (HRT) - in this case, the synthetic form of thyroxine is not necessary. In certain cases, patients may need to use the human thyroid hormone in addition to the synthetic hormone.

One important aspect of treating Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy is the working of brain development. The brain cells and neurons of the Hypothyroid patient have slow regenerating activity. Because of this, the maternal thyroid hormones, which stimulate the brain's growth and development system, are not produced in sufficient quantity. Because the brain cells and neurons of Hypothyroid children are still developing, they tend to be smaller than those of normal children. Thus, they experience a slower rate of brain development. Because of this and other factors, researchers believe that Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy is caused mostly by inadequate maternal thyroid hormones and insufficient brain development for the babies.

When there are symptoms of Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy, it is best to see your doctor immediately for a proper diagnosis. A blood test will be needed to measure thyroid hormone levels. Also, a physical examination will be needed to make sure that there are no other possible diseases causing Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy.

To conclude, Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy must be diagnosed and treated immediately. Its effects on the fetus cannot be reversed. Moreover, it may lead to other complications such as fetal growth retardation, cleft palate, congenital heart defects, decreased IQ, etc.
